Bidding farewell to 2022 won’t be complete without setting new goals for 2023. So, let us help you with that! Check out these 5 healthy habits for a healthier you.

Everyday is Less Sugar Day

Get this fact in your head that 1 out of 2 people is overweight in Malaysia. Get your sweet treat fix only once a week. Make it as rare as possible and make it harder to access it. Empty your candies and junk food corner in your pantry. Stop following all those food hunt channels and surround yourself with the right circle who has the same goal as yours.

Challenge yourself to pay a visit to a restaurant serving cold pressed juices, vegan meals, smoothie bowls and anything else that allows you to taste the goodness of whole fruits and vegetables. Once you’ve been ‘trapped’ in this healthy meal circle, you will no longer crave for that extra added sugar.

The more vege the merrier

2023 is gonna be the year for you to try lots of varieties of veggies. Don’t be scared and find the one suitable for your plate. Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as part of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables can be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed. They are absolutely low in calories and packed with other nutrients, while reducing your risk of developing chronic diseases.

Do you know leafy vegetables are also a rich source of calcium? It’s not a surprise when people will only focus on dairy products for calcium and ignore leafy vegetables. Well, you will no longer look at it the same way. Those with intolerance to lactose, can have these options:

Vege

Calcium (mg/100g)

Watercress

200

Chinese Kailan

179

Mustard Green

138

Spinach

Shake your body

If your new year resolution is to shed a few kilograms away from your body, make sure you’re not going to do it by starving yourself. Rapid weight loss will eventually backfire your own health. It can cause decreased energy, brittle hair and nails, extreme fatigue, compromised immune system, lower metabolism and weakened bones.

Choose the right diet, not the fast one. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat. That means one pound of muscle burns more calories a day than one pound of fat. Don't cut more than 500 calories per day and combine both diet and exercise to lose weight healthily.

Subscribe to any Youtube fitness channel that you like, spend 30 minutes every day to work out, and choose different kinds of physical activity to excite you. Be it jogging, brisk walking, dancing or even singing to your heart content. Choose activities that are suitable and importantly, enjoyable for you.

Learn new random things everyday

Knowledge is power, that goes without saying. Broaden your mind and learn new things everyday. There’s a Chinese proverb that says ‘Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere’.

Challenge yourself to learn new things that scare you. Pickup your cooking set and try the simplest recipe that you think you can pull off. Turn on your juicer, and explore different juice recipes everyday.

No one should stop you from trying new things and limit your potential. Although it is important to excel in a field related to your career, picking up new skills during your free time will definitely give you a sense of freedom to be creative and explore new worlds.

Make breakfast a must

Have a healthy breakfast every morning. It fuels up your day and helps you to make the right choices throughout the day.

Cross-sectional studies indicate that young people who habitually eat breakfast have a higher-quality diet, eat fewer unhealthy snacks, and have better body weight management compared with those who don’t.

Like the old saying ‘Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper’. Fix your morning breakfast to consist of complex carbohydrates (beans or veggies), protein, and plant based fats (nuts, seeds, oils). Fixing your breakfast will force you to start your day early, thus you will have longer hours to be productive.
