As we approach Malaysia's Independence Day, also known as Merdeka Day, it’s a time to celebrate our nation’s rich history and diverse culture. What better way to commemorate this special occasion than by enjoying delicious, healthy dishes that reflect the vibrant flavors of Malaysia? We believe in nourishing your body with nutritious meals, so here are a few healthy dishes to celebrate independence day in Malaysia ways!

Nasi Ulam

A classic Malay rice salad, Nasi Ulam is flavored with a variety of fresh herbs, vegetables, and spices. It's nutrient-rich dishes but also full of flavor. You may also increase the amount of fiber and nutrients in this dish by using brown rice instead of white rice. You can also add chopped herbs (such mint, basil, and turmeric leaves), long beans, toasted coconut, and diced cucumber to your meals.

Asam Pedas Fish

Asam Pedas is a spicy and tangy fish stew that is a favorite in many Malaysian homes including myself. To make it healthier, use fresh fish like snapper and avoid frying it. Add veggies like okra and eggplant and boil the fish in a broth made with tamarind, tomatoes, and chili sauce. The omega-3 fatty acids in the fish and the antioxidants in the vegetables make this dish very healthy.

Ayam Percik

Ayam Percik is a delicious meal of grilled chicken marinated with various spices and coconut milk. You can use skinless chicken thighs or breasts for a healthier option. Marinate the chicken in a mixture of coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger, and turmeric, then grill it to perfection. This dish is high in protein and healthy fats, making it a perfect addition to your Merdeka celebration.

Otak-Otak

Otak-otak is a fish cake made of ground fish mixed with spices and wrapped in leaf parcels. Otak-otak is traditionally served steamed or grilled, encased within the leaf parcel it is cooked in. To make a healthier version, use lean fish like snapper and steam the fish cakes instead of grilling them. The blend of fish, coconut milk, and spices like lemongrass and chili provides a rich source of protein and healthy fats.

Ulam Raja with Sambal Belacan

A traditional Malay salad called Ulam Raja is made up of raw veggies and herbs and is typically served with a spicy dipping sauce. A variety of raw vegetables, such as winged beans, cucumber, and daun kaduk (wild betel leaves). Serve with a handmade sambal belacan consisting of lime juice, prawn paste, chili and a tiny bit of sugar. This dish is a great way to enjoy fresh, raw vegetables packed with vitamins and minerals.
